Jesus Christ was born of a mortal mother, Mary, and an immortal father, Heavenly Father. He is literally the Son of God. Because of His great love for us, Heavenly Father sent Jesus Christ to earth to be our Savior. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).
Jesus is the son of God the Father, acts under the Father’s direction, and is in complete harmony with Him. (see Isa. 43: 11; Isa. 49: 26; 1 Tim. 1: 1; 2 Ne. 22: 2).
The scriptures teach us that Jesus was the firstborn of all of God’s spirit children and that He is the only begotten child of God in the flesh. (see D&C 93:21) Therefore all mankind are spiritual brothers and sisters to Jesus, for He is the eldest of the spirit children of God.
The Savior Jesus Christ, while on the earth, taught that he was the Son of God, and referred to himself by that title frequently (see Matt. 27: 43; Luke 22: 70; John 5: 25; John 9: 35-37).
In the scriptures, we often find the title Son of God used by others in speaking to Jesus (see Matt. 14: 33; Matt. 16: 16; Luke 4: 41). For example, “Nathanael answered and saith unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God.” (see John 1: 49) And Martha said “Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God.” (see John 11: 27)
Scriptures, both ancient and modern, confirm that Jesus Christ is literally the Son of God the Father, being the Only Begotten of the Father in the flesh. (see Moses 6: 52, 54, 57; Jacob 4: 5; and D&C 20: 21)
